Parenting Under Stress: Advice & Support

All children test boundaries, right?

However, holding those boundaries without getting angry and being able to compassionately set limits takes an incredible amount of self-awareness and emotional maturity.

Do you feel like you need to brush up on your self-regulation skills?

Children need us to be attentive and available to help them regain their emotional balance.

In the early years, a child's emotional balance can be thrown off needing to be re-set as often as every FIVE minutes.

Intense? Draining?

Just a weeeee bit.

Add in some stress, a lack of basic self-care and a few emotionally triggering events, and it's easy to see how we can let ourselves get so off-track.

Survival.

Whether you are parenting toddlers or parenting teenagers, seeing behavior through the muddied filter of your past experiences is a natural default.

When we're stressed - we regress to what we know "works."

No time for thinking - we just REACT.  Fear, threats... whatever.

  • So what do you do when you or your child is feeling distressed?
  • How do you re-connect after you've yelled out of total desperation and lack of sleep?
  • What can you say to a child that is extra-sensitive or chronically inflexible and rigid?

I have some ideas for you.

Check out this short video class with my friend and colleague, Elizabeth Walther LCSW. She'll show you how to "prepare and repair" for those difficult times.

In this 20 min session, you'll learn:

  • how to save your sanity with "anticipation and preparation"
  • 3 steps to repairing connection after mistakes
  • 2 exercises to help your child make sense of his/her experiences
  • new ways to handle your emotional triggers

After you watch, I'd love to hear your thoughts on becoming emotionally present. Is it hard for you? How do your emotions influence your behaviors?

Leave me a comment and share your thoughts!

You know, since moving across the country and leaving my community of 15 years, I don't have many local friends who are on the same conscious path.

It would be easy (and not socially unacceptable) for me to adopt a more hard-lined approach to parenting and discipline.

So, it makes me even more grateful for my online community.

You provide me the space to make mistakes and the support to try again.

This path isn't easy. If you've ever felt like you're alone on this journey to peaceful parenting - then come have a sneak-peek at my Support Page and see what we have going on this month! (The full Stress-Proof Your Kids 90 min Audio class with Elizabeth is also available HERE)

Thanks so much for reading, watching and sharing! Have a great week.

Warmly,
