How to Avoid the Most Common Parenting Mistakes (& What to Do Instead)

My child - like most children - resists any attempt I may make to control her. She will shut down at the first sign of a threatening tone or demanding voice.

Have you used your tone of voice to try and change your child's behavior or to try and control what's happening?

It can even happen without our awareness.

The truth is, there are very few times that we need to control the situation. Unless it is an issue of safety or immediate danger, we always have an opportunity to use connection rather than control and a chance to be an example of kindness and compassion.

When you hear a "No" from your child - it doesn't mean, "Suck it, Mom" any more than your yelling means, "I don't love you anymore."

But, in a reactive mode that is what we are likely to hear.

We can argue about limits, negotiate until we're exhausted, or give in to avoid conflict, but if we want to offer children the opportunity to build their skills and strengthen their brainpower - we have to connect before we direct.

In this TEACHable Moments video, I'll let you in on five of the most common parenting mistakes you might be making that turn conflict into chaos - and I'll share a few strategies you can use to make changes in your home.
