What to Do When You Get Triggered

Do you have any of these habits...

Getting testy with slow or cranky cashiers?
Complaining or criticizing things or people?
Blaming others for making you feel a certain way?
Getting aggravated with the person who cut you off in traffic?

The ability to cope with and respond to our environment with grace and ease is not about knowing the "right" answer, or the "perfect" thing to say.

Taking control of our emotional reactions isn't about having "better-behaved" kids or a "more understanding" partner.

It is about being conscious and aware of our needs and feelings so we can choose our actions.

Without conscious choice - we react automatically. Without mindful intention, we resort to unconsciously relying on our survival skills to get us through conflict.

Our perspective is limited, and the brain is focused on shutting down - not reaching out.

I've had many clients ask, "But what do I do when my child is screaming / won't stop / isn't motivated?"

Getting triggered and feeling dysregulated is one of those human experiences which happens to us all. Being quick to anger is a habit you can leave behind so you can be more emotionally responsive.

In this TEACHable Moments video, I want to share with you the first steps to handling your anger and what to do when you get triggered so you can respond more thoughtfully to your children.

I love sending you ideas and tips for staying conscious and emotionally aware with your kids, but sometimes our habits keep us stuck in old patterns of dominance and control.

Using your power may get you what you want - sometimes - but most often it's a relationship hazard.

If you feel you are easily set-off by the behavior of your kids, then check out this free 10-day online retreat and I'll show you how to turn the chaos into cooperation.

Thanks so much for watching, as always, I'd love to hear from you. Leave me a note in the comments and tell me what you think.

Have a great week, and please remember, it's about being conscious - not perfect!
